First-Person Seek-and-Destroy Missions... in Space!

They all started with the Star Trek text-based computer game, where your mission as captain of the Enterprise is to engage the Klingons in battle, protect your starbases, and make sure the Enterprise doesn't take too much damage. Once Douglas Neubauer set this idea to computer graphics with a first-person perspective, there was no looking back... except in games that offered an aft view of the ship.

Star Raiders - The first game of this type, and arguably the first killer app for any computer. After the release of Neubauer's game for the Atari home computer line, many gamers purchased or pleaded for an Atari 800 just so they could play Star Raiders. Later the Atari 2600 and Atari 5200 received ports. Two sequels later followed.

Starmaster - This Atari 2600 game by Activision was released the same year as the 2600 port of Star Raiders. Most players consider Activision's game to be superior over Atari's heavily simplified port.

Star Voyager - One of Imagic's first games was this Atari 2600 exclusive. On the surface it looks similar to Starmaster and Star Raiders, but the game's focus is more on "destroy" and less on "seek." Here there is no galaxy map and no starbases to worry about. After wiping out an enemy fleet, you must find and travel through a portal before it disappears. Succeed and your ship's energy reserves will be replenished for the next battle. Miss the portal and you better hope your existing reserves are good enough.
