Commodore 64 Battlezone Review

Really this one isn't a bad port, but it definitely doesn't make a good first impression. The graphics seem to recreate the arcade game fairly faithfully, but when the game starts and things begin moving, the game's imprecise and jittery animation becomes very apparent. The player's tank seems to move forward and backward much more quickly than it rotates, and gets caught very easily on obstacles, even obstacles the tank appears to have already moved around. Speaking of moving, the sound of the tank's treads makes absolutely no sense, sounding more like a car perpetually accelerating while shifting through an endless set of gears.

But, once all that has been stomached, the game proves decent. The physics of bullets and how they relate to the player's tank and its movements appear to be pretty solid. Some players may even prefer the Commodore port's easier difficulty compared to the arcade game. Other players, however, may find even the Atari 2600 version better than this. At least in that one there aren't any structures with apparently invisible additions blocking the way.

Grade: B-.
