Commodore 64 Choplifter Review

Despite the temptation of more powerful hardware, Broderbund's programmers wisely decided not to enhance Choplifter too much when porting it from the Apple II to the Commodore 64. While there is a little more sound here, the graphics remain sparse, and the gameplay is virtually untouched, with the goal still to rescue as many of those 64 hostages as possible. Therefore Commodore owners have the chance to see exactly what made the game such a hit on the Apple, which is a good thing. If there is any complaint to be made, it is about how the helicopter now has to be controlled with a single-button digital joystick, compared to the Apple's two-button analog joystick. The helicopter doesn't move quite as fluidly as a result, stopping suddenly whenever the joystick is let go. That one button must be used both to turn the helicopter around and to fire, which can make for occasional accidents. Really though the compromises aren't too bad, and Choplifter remains just as addicting here as it did on its original platform.
