Atari 2600 Donkey Kong Review

Yes, it looks like Donkey Kong, and for the most part it even plays like Donkey Kong. Coleco got closer with this port than Atari did with their 2600 Pac-Man effort. Even so, they didn't get anywhere near close enough. With only two of the original game's four screens, absolutely no between-screen animations, and an almost nonexistent ramp in difficulty, this game gets really boring, really fast. Of course Coleco still sold cartridges by the truckload, because everyone had an Atari 2600 and everyone wanted to play Donkey Kong. But like the cheapest store-brand soda when what you're craving is a good, sugary Dr. Pepper, 2600 Donkey Kong was enough to quench players' thirst, but far from satisfying.

Grade: C.
