Pac-Man lives in a maze filled with dots, power pellets, and the occasional bonus fruit. Also inhabiting the maze are four ghosts intent on cutting short Pac-Man's munchies. Pac-Man must take care not to become trapped by the ghosts, but he can also use the power pellets to turn the tables on his pursuers, if only temporarily.
Each time Pac-Man clears the maze, a new set of dots appears. As the game progresses, Pac-Man and the ghosts become faster, the time granted by the power pellets becomes less, and the reward for eating a bonus fruit increases.
Pac-Man's four adversaries each has his own personality. The red ghost, named Blinky or Akabei, pursues Pac-Man directly after spotting him. The pink ghost, Pinky, tries to head Pac-Man off and catch him in the opposite direction. Aosuke or Inky, the blue-green ghost, is hard to predict but often actually runs away from Pac-Man. Finally, the slowest ghost, the orange Guzuta or Clyde, tends to follow his own path, seemingly uninterested in Pac-Man's whereabouts.
A bonus fruit appears twice in each level, just below the ghost box in the middle of the maze. The bonuses are:
1st level | Cherry |
2nd level | Strawberry |
3rd & 4th levels | Orange |
5th & 6th levels | Apple |
7th & 8th levels | Grapes |
9th & 10th levels | Galaxian |
11th & 12th levels | Bell |
13th level & higher | Key |
