Despite having only a single-button joystick to work with, Atari 2600 Vanguard cleverly preserves the ability to fire in all four directions. The joystick controls both ship movement and fire direction, and a diagonal will make the ship fire in two directions at the same time. There is also an option to always fire forward in addition to whichever way the joystick is aimed.
