Taito has released some landmark arcade games in their history, including Space Invaders, Arkanoid and Bubble Bobble. They've also released a number of titles very few people remember anymore, like Gladiator, Electric Yo-Yo and The New Zealand Story. Jungle Hunt falls somewhere in between, a game remembered by fans of early 1980s arcades, but not really one on anybody's absolute must-play list. That seems about right. The gameplay of Jungle Hunt is solid, and other than an obvious Pitfall! influence, there aren't a whole lot of recycled ideas here. Even so, the game doesn't quite reach the addictiveness of something like Centipede or Defender, or even Moon Patrol. The graphics may be at least partly to blame, with their odd, pastel-like colors that make everything brightly clash with everything else, from the pink and yellow jungle to the rocks that look more like big red meatballs. Whatever the reason, Jungle Hunt is a good game, but not a truly great game, and therefore deserves its place in the second tier of classic arcade games.
