Atari 2600 Jungle Hunt Review

Released in 1983, when Atari was publishing one solid arcade port after another, Jungle Hunt for the 2600 is indeed solid, if not truly memorable. Despite the typically blocky graphics, this version does a good job recreating the scenes of the arcade game, even if the rockslide takes place on a rather flat hill, and the cannibals come only one at a time. The problem is that the difficulty ramps up very quickly, while at the same time there isn't much incentive to push into the higher levels. No monkeys or other new surprises appear later in the game, and so the challenges of the first level are the same in every level afterward. Speed increases, and the vines in the jungle become particularly slippery, but otherwise, it's the same game over again, only much harder, to the point of unfairness. Of course you can always play with the goal of getting a higher score, but once you've seen one level, you've seen them all, and the steep difficulty ramp makes it even harder to settle in and warm up to the challenge.

Still, the game does have some fun to offer, just like the arcade game before it. And if you're the type who likes when games quickly twist the difficulty knobs to 11, then 2600 Jungle Hunt just might be your cup of English tea. But be careful with those vines!

Grade: B-.
