Where the Apple II version is surprisingly good, this effort is surprisingly bad. The Commodore 64, built to allow scrolling playfields with ships flying over them, is far more capable at reproducing a game like Xevious than this release implies. The interaction between the Solvalou and the airborne enemy ships is passable, but everything else about this version seems to be an afterthought. Almost nothing on the ground fires at the Solvalou. The only exceptions are the octagon-shaped Domogram rovers, which appear so rarely and are so predictable that they shouldn't even bother. There are no hidden enemies or bonuses to discover. Also, while in other versions certain enemies, including the mothership, only appear when certain landmarks are reached, this version has pretty much no correlation between what's on the ground and what's in the air. And that's not even a complete list of everything that's wrong here.
Overall, it's a disappointment, but don't blame the hardware.
