Tetris Geneology
Many officially licensed games have been released under the
Tetris banner. Here are some of the highlights.
1986 - Tetris - Guide falling tetrominoes of different shapes to create
complete rows of blocks.
1989 - Welltris - Pieces slide down the four walls of a three-dimensional well, and
must be organized on the well's "floor" to form complete columns or
rows.
1990 - Faces: Tris III - Use the falling pieces to create familiar faces in Tetris-like
fashion.
1990 - Hatris - Different types of hats must be organized into stacks of the same
hat.
1993 - Tetris 2 - Also known as Tetris Flash, this game requires players to
line up blocks of the same color in order to clear the screen.
1995 - Tetris Plus - This arcade game, later ported to the Sony PlayStation, Sega
Saturn and Game Boy, adds a Puzzle Mode with the goal of saving a professor
stranded on top of the mountain of blocks before he is crushed by spikes moving
down the screen. A sequel followed.
1996 - 3D Tetris - Tetris goes 3D in this release for Nintendo's Virtual
Boy.
1998 - Tetris DX - Portable Tetris gets colorized in this Game Boy Color
release.
1999 - The New Tetris - Tetris for the Nintedo 64, with an added incentive to
create 4x4 "super squares" out of the falling tetrominoes.
1999 - The Next Tetris - A spiffed up, flashier Tetris, and one of the few games
ever created for Nuon-enhanced DVD players. Dreamcast and PC editions were
also available.
2001 - Tetris Worlds - Tetris makes its debut on the latest generation of
consoles, that is, the Sony PlayStation 2, the Nintendo Game Cube and the
Microsoft Xbox, as a collection of different game variations originally seen
in other Tetris releases. A PC version was released
also.
2006 - Tetris DS - Tetris comes to the Nintendo DS.
