Tetris Geneology

Many officially licensed games have been released under the Tetris banner. Here are some of the highlights.

- Tetris - Guide falling tetrominoes of different shapes to create complete rows of blocks.

- Welltris - Pieces slide down the four walls of a three-dimensional well, and must be organized on the well's "floor" to form complete columns or rows.

- Faces: Tris III - Use the falling pieces to create familiar faces in Tetris-like fashion.

- Hatris - Different types of hats must be organized into stacks of the same hat.

- Tetris 2 - Also known as Tetris Flash, this game requires players to line up blocks of the same color in order to clear the screen.

- Tetris Plus - This arcade game, later ported to the Sony PlayStation, Sega Saturn and Game Boy, adds a Puzzle Mode with the goal of saving a professor stranded on top of the mountain of blocks before he is crushed by spikes moving down the screen. A sequel followed.

- 3D Tetris - Tetris goes 3D in this release for Nintendo's Virtual Boy.

- Tetris DX - Portable Tetris gets colorized in this Game Boy Color release.

- The New Tetris - Tetris for the Nintedo 64, with an added incentive to create 4x4 "super squares" out of the falling tetrominoes.

- The Next Tetris - A spiffed up, flashier Tetris, and one of the few games ever created for Nuon-enhanced DVD players. Dreamcast and PC editions were also available.

- Tetris Worlds - Tetris makes its debut on the latest generation of consoles, that is, the Sony PlayStation 2, the Nintendo Game Cube and the Microsoft Xbox, as a collection of different game variations originally seen in other Tetris releases. A PC version was released also.

- Tetris DS - Tetris comes to the Nintendo DS.
