Arcade 720 Review

Atari was determined to make an impression with the world's first skateboarding video game, and they succeeded. With a custom cabinet sporting a marquee shaped like a boom box and a unique controller offering a full 360 degrees of movement (or even twice that), 720 definitely commanded attention when first released to the arcades. Fortunately the game is good enough to keep that attention, with intuitive game play, catchy tunes and a landscape just perfect for skateboarding. On the other hand, 720 can be a tough game to master, and all but the savviest of boarders will burn a lot of credits trying to compete in all 16 park events. Perhaps it's because of this difficulty, or perhaps it's because other skateboarding games like California Games and Skate or Die appeared soon after, that 720 didn't leave a more lasting impression, or get ported to very many home systems. Despite a somewhat muted legacy, however, 720 is a gem among many in Atari's catalog, and its inclusion on several arcade game compilations ensures the game will never be completely forgotten.
