Vertical-Scrolling One-Man and Two-Man Armies

The vertical-scrolling shoot-'em-up started with Xevious, but Commando was the first to put a lone soldier on the ground instead of a fighter jet in the air. These are the games that further ran with that idea.

Ikari Warriors - Arguably the most successful game to follow in Commando's footsteps, Ikari Warriors expanded on the idea by allowing two players to team up and offering controls which enable players to shoot in one direction while moving in another.

Who Dares Wins - Not only is this Commodore 64 game an imitation of Commando, its title is borrowed as well. "Who Dares Wins" is the motto of several military groups, including the United Kindom's Special Air Service.

Rambo: First Blood Part II - Any game based on the Sylvester Stallone movie pretty much had to follow this style of play. Rambo must find the POW camp deep in the jungles of Vietnam, rescue the soldiers held prisoner, and then get them safely out of the country. Bonus: Those awesome exploding arrowheads are here, letting Rambo lay waste to everything (and everyone) in his path.
